Investigador Costarricense Recibe Prestigioso Premio de Investigación en la R. P. China
Beijing, 2 de mayo 2018. La Embajada de Costa Rica en China se complace en anunciar que el investigador costarricense Carlos Andrés Palma, profesor de la Academia China de las Ciencias (CAS por sus siglas en inglés), ha sido galardonado con el financiamiento 1000 Talentos Jóvenes 2018 (edición decimocuarta) por su investigación científica.

El premio otorga a jóvenes investigadores, fondos para establecer un laboratorio y desarrollar líneas de investigación de punta. El programa 1000 Talentos es una iniciativa del Gobierno Central de la R. P. China, establecida con el fin de atraer talentos extraordinarios a nivel mundial y aumentar la competividad e innovación. El programa cuenta con el apoyo de cinco ministerios y diversos organismos científicos y tecnológicos. Parte del financiamiento involucra cerca de 500 mil USD alocados por el programa y más de 300 mil USD de la parte de la unidad sede, el Instituto de Física (IOP) de la Academia China de las Ciencias.
La investigación del profesor en física y química se centra en la fabricación de dispositivos de monocapas de superconductores moleculares. Según el Dr. Palma, esta línea de investigación única en el mundo, tendría potencial para desarrollar superconductores a temperatura ambiente, una frontera que promete revolucionar el transporte, el cómputo y la generación de energía. Previamente, el Prof. Palma ha sido investigador en Múnich, Maguncia, Londres, Zúrich, Berkeley y es doctor de la Universidad de Estrasburgo, donde tuvo la oportunidad de trabajar con tres laureados Nobeles.
Siendo uno de los primeros latinoamericanos en ser galardonado con el premio, el Prof. Palma se une a la exclusiva lista de latinoamericanos que lideran laboratorios académicos fuera del continente. Conversando con la Embajadora Patricia Rodríguez, el investigador comenta que “es un gran honor ser seleccionado y poder efectuar investigación en una institución tan prestigiosa como CAS. Me gustaría aprovechar este reconocimiento para crear lazos de cooperación y atraer talento costarricense al ambiente innovador que ofrece la R. P. China, que hoy en día ofrece más oportunidades emprendedoras bilaterales que Estados Unidos y Europa”

Costa Rican Professor Receives Prestigious Research Award at P.R.C
Beijing, May 2, 2018. The Costa Rican Embassy in China is pleased to announce that the Costa Rican researcher Carlos Andrés Palma, a professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), has been awarded “Recruitment Program of Foreign Experts” (1000 Talentos Jóvenes) for its scientific research.
The prize gives young professors funds to establish a laboratory and develop cutting-edge research lines. The Recruitment Program is an initiative of the Central Government of the People’s Republic of China, established with the aim of attracting extraordinary talents worldwide and increasing competitiveness and innovation. The program has the support of five ministries and various scientific and technological organizations. Part of the financing involves about 500 thousand USD allocated by the program and more than 300 thousand USD from the part of the headquarters unit, the Institute of Physics (IOP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The research of the professor in physics and chemistry focuses on the manufacture of monolayer devices of molecular superconductors. According to Dr. Palma, this line of research unique in the world, would have the potential to develop superconductors at room temperature, a frontier that promises to revolutionize transportation, computation and power generation. Previously, Prof. Palma has been a researcher in Munich, Mainz, London, Zurich, Berkeley and is a doctor at the University of Strasbourg, where he had the opportunity to work with three Nobel Laureates.
As one of the first Latin Americans to be awarded the prize, Prof. Palma joins the exclusive list of Latin Americans who lead academic laboratories outside the continent. Conversed with Ambassador Patricia Rodríguez, the researcher comments that «it is a great honor to be selected and to be able to carry out research in a prestigious institution such as CAS. I would like to take advantage of this recognition to create cooperation ties and attract Costa Rican talent for the innovative environment offered by P.R.C, which today offers more bilateral entrepreneurial opportunities than the United States and Europe. »
